Is it Illegal to Smoke When Driving Your Skoda Octavia?

The Skoda Octavia is an excellent car that is equally at home driving around the city our out on the open highway. However, there is some confusion amongst drivers regarding activities that can be performed whilst driving our cars. Specifically, we are talking about smoking in your can and/or driving while engaging in this activity. In this article, we will examine this subject in greater detail and try to clear things up.

Is Driving and Smoking at the Same Time Legal?

The short answer here is yes. However, things are not as clear cut as this would suggest. It is not illegal to drive and smoke at the same time, but it is illegal to smoke cigarettes in your car if there are minors present. This is not surprising because smoking has become a real hot button topic for health campaigners and law makers in recent years. There are other factors that should be considered if you want to smoke in your car. The restricted age limits and the exact penalties for smoking in a vehicle with a minor can vary a great deal depending upon which state or territory you’re in at the time.

The Law in Western Australia

Let’s take a look at the regulations in our state of Western Australia and the penalties given to those that fall foul of the law. This information can be found with much more detail than we can cover here on the WA Health Page that covers smoke free vehicles. Here in WA, it’s illegal to smoke if there are any children under the age of 17 in the car with you at the same time. If you’re caught by the Police, you could be looking at a $200 fine if you don't contest it. However, if the case goes to court a fine of up to and including $1000 could be the price that you have to pay for that quick cigarette.

Other State Rules and Penalties

We cannot cover every state and territory, but to show how different things can be let’s take a look at our neighbour South Australia. On the SA Health page, there is an entire page dedicated to smoking in the car, and it’s illegal to do this with any passenger that is under the age of 16. This legislation affects anyone smoking in the vehicle, and it doesn’t matter if the car is parked or in motion at the time of the offence.

Understanding the Skoda Superb Airbag Warning Light

The Skoda Superb is a fantastic family car, and one of the things that many people appreciate most is the tremendous array of safety features. Skoda works hard at trying to make the best cars that are fun to drive, safe for their users and fuel efficient at the same time. One of the primary safety features that we’ve become used to in recent decades is the humble airbag. This has developed over time to become one of the best ways to prevent a serious injury in a vehicular collision. However, the best safety technology in the world cannot help you if it’s not working correctly. This is where the airbag safety lights comes into play, and ignoring could be a potentially fatal mistake.

What Does the Airbag Warning Light Indicate?

Many drivers are confused when they see an airbag warning light come on for the first time. This isn’t a common occurrence, and this can lead to some misunderstanding about what this is trying to tell you. The airbags in your car are designed to rapidly inflate with a fraction of a second in an emergency situation. They are part of a larger Supplemental Restraint System or SRS for short. The SRS will use sensory data to make the determination to deploy an airbag during a collision. If there is an issue somewhere in the SRS, the car will warn you via the airbag warning light. This warning often appears as a car occupant with a ball in their lap, or it could say “SRS” or even just “Airbag.”

What is the SRS Sensor Telling Me?

The majority of SRS systems are linked into the seats and seatbelts to detect a collision situation before you can even react to the danger. The sensors in the seatbelt are constantly looking for any sudden or hard seat belt tension that will occur during any rapid deceleration. These systems are now smart enough to differentiate between those forces generated through hard braking and those caused by a genuine impact. The SRS sensors will also tell the system which seat is unoccupied in the car, and the airbags will not be deployed there. If any of these SRS sensors are not working, it could be a wiring issue or possibly a problem in the airbag unit itself. This is when the airbag warning light will come on, and it will not go off again until this problem is fixed. This means that the airbag will not deploy if an accident occurs so this is very serious from a safety perspective.

What Should You Do Next?

It’s very important to get this issue fixed as soon as possible by a qualified technician. Get in touch with Skoda Perth for advice, and we can help you to get this issue dealt with quickly. It’s important to understand that this is important from a safety standpoint, but your insurance company may not pay out if this is an unresolved issue during an accident.

If they are looking to buy a Skoda Superb, Perth based motorists should visit Skoda Perth to check out our latest hot deals.
