Understanding the Skoda Superb Airbag Warning Light

The Skoda Superb is a fantastic family car, and one of the things that many people appreciate most is the tremendous array of safety features. Skoda works hard at trying to make the best cars that are fun to drive, safe for their users and fuel efficient at the same time. One of the primary safety features that we’ve become used to in recent decades is the humble airbag. This has developed over time to become one of the best ways to prevent a serious injury in a vehicular collision. However, the best safety technology in the world cannot help you if it’s not working correctly. This is where the airbag safety lights comes into play, and ignoring could be a potentially fatal mistake.

What Does the Airbag Warning Light Indicate?

Many drivers are confused when they see an airbag warning light come on for the first time. This isn’t a common occurrence, and this can lead to some misunderstanding about what this is trying to tell you. The airbags in your car are designed to rapidly inflate with a fraction of a second in an emergency situation. They are part of a larger Supplemental Restraint System or SRS for short. The SRS will use sensory data to make the determination to deploy an airbag during a collision. If there is an issue somewhere in the SRS, the car will warn you via the airbag warning light. This warning often appears as a car occupant with a ball in their lap, or it could say “SRS” or even just “Airbag.”

What is the SRS Sensor Telling Me?

The majority of SRS systems are linked into the seats and seatbelts to detect a collision situation before you can even react to the danger. The sensors in the seatbelt are constantly looking for any sudden or hard seat belt tension that will occur during any rapid deceleration. These systems are now smart enough to differentiate between those forces generated through hard braking and those caused by a genuine impact. The SRS sensors will also tell the system which seat is unoccupied in the car, and the airbags will not be deployed there. If any of these SRS sensors are not working, it could be a wiring issue or possibly a problem in the airbag unit itself. This is when the airbag warning light will come on, and it will not go off again until this problem is fixed. This means that the airbag will not deploy if an accident occurs so this is very serious from a safety perspective.

What Should You Do Next?
